patrol vessels were confirmed—an increase of 14 units from last month and the highest recorded count
in 2026.
2. Frequent helicopter operations have been observed in the South China Sea, with 10 instances recorded
since the 13th. These are presumed to have launched from PLAN vessels deployed southwest of the
Penghu Islands. Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) stated that the PLA Navy and Air Force
are conducting joint combat readiness patrols.
3. On the 17th, the JMSDF destroyer JS Ikazuchi transited the Taiwan Strait. The PLA Eastern Theater
Command announced that it mobilized naval and air forces to track and monitor the vessel throughout
its transit. No provocative actions were observed; monitoring was limited to two UAVs and naval vessels.
